For many people, getting around is just part of the daily routine. A bus to work. A metro ride across town. A quick trip to the shops. Or maybe avoiding public transport altogether whenever possible. We recently helped collect responses for a Bohemian Research survey through MultiPolls asking people in Colombia one simple question:
“How often do you use public transport?”
And for a large share of respondents, the answer was: pretty often.
Public transport was a regular part of the week for most respondents
More than six in ten respondents said they use public transport every day or several times a week. Breaking that down:
- 28.4% said they use public transport every day.
- 32.8% said they use it several times a week.
Together, that means 61.2% of respondents were regular public transport users. Interestingly, the most common single answer was actually “occasionally,” selected by 34.2%. Only 4.6% said they never use public transport. So while not everyone depends on buses, trains or other shared transport every day, very few respondents said they avoid it completely.
Women were more likely to use public transport every day
Daily use was slightly more common among women. 31.1% of women said they use public transport every day, compared with 25.4% of men.
Men were also more likely to say they never use it. The answer “never” was selected by 7.5% of men, compared with just 2.8% of women.
The 30–44 age group used it most often
The most frequent daily users in the survey were respondents aged 30–44. In this group, 35.3% said they use public transport every day. Daily use was lower among the other age groups:
- 25.1% among respondents aged 18–29
- 23.5% among those aged 45–59
- 22.7% among respondents aged 60 and older
So in this survey, people in their thirties and early forties were the most likely to make public transport part of their everyday routine.
Younger respondents were also the most likely to say “never”
Here’s one of the more surprising findings. Although younger people are often associated with buses, metros and shared transport, respondents aged 18–29 were actually the most likely age group to say they never use public transport.
In this group, 10.2% selected “never.” That compares with:
- 1.6% among respondents aged 30–44
- 1.2% among respondents aged 45–59
That makes the youngest group stand out at both ends of the spectrum: many used public transport regularly, but they were also the most likely to avoid it altogether.
So, how do Colombians in the survey get around?
Here are the main numbers:
- 61.2% used public transport every day or several times a week.
- 28.4% used it every day.
- 32.8% used it several times a week.
- 34.2% used public transport occasionally.
- Just 4.6% said they never use it.
Women were more likely than men to report daily use, while respondents aged 30–44 were the most frequent daily users overall.
